Lomond Mountain Rescue Team

LATEST NEWS AND RESCUE STORIES

Today, members of the team met up with Lesley and John, organisers of The Fitness Garage Charity Santa Dash held at the Mugdock Reservoirs.

The fundraiser was the final act to remember Lesley’s late Sister Julie, who sadly passed away at the end of October. Lesley’s wish was to raise funds to buy a drone to aid the work of Lomond Mountain Rescue Team .

Such has been the success of Lesley’s efforts to date, that two drones have been purchased.

Today, despite the inclement weather, we were pleased to demonstrate the inaugural flight of ‘Drone Julie’. Together with ‘Drone Lesley’, these state of the art machines will be a tremendous asset to the Team and will strengthen the team’s ability for searching difficult to access areas thus making it safer for team members.

Whilst this is a personal tragedy for Lesley, we hope that she and the family will gain some comfort from the knowledge that their efforts will make a very definite, positive effect on searches for the lost and injured on the local hills.

The Team is hugely grateful to Lesley and to all the participants of today’s fun run.

Today saw a joint training day with colleagues from Killin Mountain Rescue Team and Ochils Mountain Rescue Team

Based in the stunning Glen Ample area, there were a series of workshops covering:

• Navigation techniques.
• Stretcher lowering on steep ground including various types of anchor for back rope protection.
• Assessment and initial treatment of a hypothermic casualty.
• Group communication and Teamwork.
• The capability of the DJI M30T drone within a Mountain Rescue environment ~ thanks to Alistair from Oban Mountain Rescue Team for making the journey down and running this workshop.

As always, great to meet up and work with other teams outside of a live callout. Many thanks to everyone involved and especially Killin MRT for hosting and organising a fantastic day.

#CallOut 39/24

At 18:39 on Sunday evening, Lomond MRT were called to an individual who had become disoriented on Ben Venue. Police Scotland were able to provide a grid reference and team members located the individual quickly and walked them back into safe ground before being transported to the car park in a team vehicle.

#CallOut 36/24 on 10/10/24
At 13:14, Lomond MRT were called to a casualty who had fallen approximately 100 metres down steep ground on Dumgoyne sustaining head and shoulder injuries. Following initial assessment and stabilisation, the casualty was stretchered off the hill and transferred to an ambulance for onward transport to hospital. Many thanks to colleagues from both Strathclyde Police Mountain Rescue Team and Scottish Ambulance Service for assistance on the hill.

At 12:31, Lomond MRT were called to a casualty who had fallen and sustained a broken wrist whilst descending Ben Venue and was struggling to continue their descent back towards Loch Ard. The casualty had received initial treatment from the guide within the party and were met by Mountain Rescue Team members who escorted the group back off the hill.

At 13:02, Lomond MRT were called to assist colleagues from Scottish Ambulance who were attending a casualty who had fallen on the West Highland Way above Milton of Buchanan. The casualty had sustained a hip injury and was unable to walk. Following assessment and the administration of pain relief, the casualty was packaged and transferred to the waiting ambulance by stretcher.
